The Law of One: Functioning in a Systemic World
Copyright © Allan Trickey (2002)
5 Steps to internalizing the law
1) Cultivate a sense for the unity of all things,
2) and the manifest and unmanifest (kinetic/potential) relationships within,
3) along with the clarity of ones own connectedness to that unity and those relationships;
4) then differentiate within those relationships while influencing the unity in a healthy or appropriate manner
5) relative to certain variables, principles (e.g. Of differentiation) or tenets (eg. Reciprocity).
While the content and dogma of world religions may vary, the common denominator is the delineation of an individuals pursuit of "functioning purity" or (piety), within a collective sense of purpose, whether an omnipotent godhead exists or not. Internalizing the Law of One results in the manifestation of servant leadership integrity.
And Jesus answered: "Seek not the law in your scriptures for the law is life, whereas the scripture is dead. I tell you truly, Moses received not his laws from God in writing, but through the living word. The law is living word of living God to living prophets for living men. In everything that is life is the law written. You find it in the grass, in the tree, in the river, in the mountain, in the birds of heaven, in the fishes of the sea, but seek it chiefly among yourselves. For I tell you truly, all things are nearer to God than the scripture which is without life. God so made life and all living things that they might by the ever-living word teach the laws of the true God to man. God wrote not the laws in the pages of books, but in your heart and in your spirit. They are in your breath, your blood, your bone; in your flesh, your bowels, your eyes, your ears, and in every little part of your body. They are present in the air, in the water, in the earth, in the plants, in the sunbeams, in the depths and in the heights. They all speak to you that you may understand the tongue and the will of the living God. But you shut your eyes that you may not see, and you shut your ears that you may not hear. I tell you truly, that the scripture is the work of man, but life and all its hosts are the work of our God. Wherefore do you not listen to the words of God, which are written in His works? And wherefore do you study the dead scriptures which are the work of the hands of men?" [Essene Gospel of Peace]
As a popular belief, the Law of One is being sought after. Once pragmatically preached by Jesus, the Law of One was driven underground by humans with an insatiable hunger for control during the events of the second half of the first century. The law later surfaced in the "Masonic" tradition and in systemic legends such as Camelot and the activities of the Knights Templar. In a continuing attempt at maintaining control, the Catholic Church retained exclusive rights to the philosophical interpretation of history (the Bible) - even going so far as to sanction the torture, mutilation and murder of thousands of people during the ethnic cleansing style inquisition (although the integrity of its original purpose is highly suspect). To publicly advocate the Law of One would constitute heresy, so the knowers kept to themselves. The then persecution of witches, wizards and knowers continues to this day. Fortunately, the introduction of the printing press was like the monstrous paradigm shift in "intellectual property" and its use after the introduction of the Internet. Anyone could now obtain access to and retain their own interpretation of life, the universe and everything (or as well as they understood it to be at the time). Then, Newton was beaned by an apple and after years of much research into the natural physical laws that govern our universe, the popular belief in the free world has become, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead toward achieving my personal wants!" An individualistic perspective that inhibits functioning in a world requiring attention to how we function in the myriad relationships we have to the living systems around us that we are engaged in.
Physicist Fritjof Capra teaches that the essence of life is the self-organization of living systems around three principles:
1) The systems are Self-Maintaining. While engaged, there are healthy, differentiated boundaries in the relationships of the systems.
2) The systems are Self-Renewing
with stability in the patterns of change (e.g. genetics, the cyclical nature of systems, yin & yang)
3) The systems are Self-Transcending
always pursuing a purity of function.
(Murray) Bowen (1913-1990) theory is about the interaction of variables that produce variation in human functioning. From 1954 to 1959, Dr. Bowen began to define concepts about the family as an emotional system that governs the biology and behavior of individuals. By the time Bowen came to Georgetown University in 1959, the basic concepts of theory were organized into eight interconnected variables: the emotional system with its variation in the counterbalance between togetherness and individuality; levels of differentiation of self; mechanisms of reactivity in the nuclear family; triangles; multigenerational transmission process; sibling position; anxiety, chronic and acute; and emotional cut off. No one concept could be explained by another concept. No one concept could be eliminated or isolated from the theory. Clinical families, Bowen's own family system, and all of human society were studied within the framework of theory. [Source: ralphmag.com]
