If there was expanded being in a "self" concept then nearly all would have a higher consciousness since nearly all are wrapped up in a focus on their self and almost completely committed to their service of self.
Instead, there is a way that leads to expanded being, a higher consciousness, and that is recognizing that we are interdependent and exist with each other, always. When we let go of "me" then we find ourselves existing in "we" -- a unity of being.
